Aloe vera has been used externally in folk medicine as a treatment for skin cancer, however, its effectiveness has never been studied scientifically. To help sooth a wound, select a lower (older) leaf, cut several inches off, slice it lengthwise, apply the gel and allow it to dry. Make sure you clean the wound properly first with soap and water.

Aloe vera is the perfect houseplant for people with a brown thumb. It requires little water and no care. It prefers sunlight, but tolerates shade and doesn’t mind poor soil conditions. The only conditions it can not tolerate are poor drainage and temperatures below 40 degrees, however, growing herbs indoors is no more difficult than growing them in the garden.

Aloe vera periodically produces off shoots, which may be removed and replanted when they are a few inches tall. Uproot the plant and work the soil gently to remove the off shoot. Return the mother plant to its bed or pot.

If you have problems with constipation, first increase the fiber in your diet, drink more fluids, and get more physical exercise. Use laxatives as a last resort.

Aloe vera latex contains laxative chemicals with such purgative action that they are called cathartics. Because aloe vera has such a drastic action it can often cause severe intestinal cramps and diarrhea. If you are looking for a natural laxative, your best bet is to seek other herbs with proven but milder results; such as, rhubarb, psyllium and cascara sagrada.  In general, aloe vera latex is not recommended for internal use.

SUGGESTIONS:
Other herbs with vulnerary actions include comfrey, horsetail, mullein, psyllium, rhubarb, rosemary, and thyme.
In reference to "natural remedies for pets" - aloe can be used on pets with dry itchy patches of skin.
