Euphrasia, known by the common name "eyebright", which refers to its use for treating all eye disorders has an anti-inflammatory action combined with astringent properties. It contains properties which exerts a definite strengthening effect on the capillaries of the eye.
Eyebright relieves inflammation caused by colds, coughs, sinus infections, sore throats and hay fever. Administration of this herb will reduce redness, swelling and visual disturbances.
The chemicals and nutrients of eyebright include bitters, inositol, volatile oils, PABA, sulfur, tannins and Vitamins A, B3, B5, B12, C, D and E.
Preparing a standard infusion of eyebright and drinking 1 small cup, 3 times a day may help some cases of hay fever and catarrh.
A poultice using a warm standard infusion of eyebright is beneficial for treating eyestrain, bloodshot eyes and conjunctivitis. Lie down for at least 20 minutes with small compresses soaked in a warm infusion of eyebright and place over the eyelids.
A weak tea made from fresh or dried herb is the best thing to bathe the eyes with several times a day. However, 3 to 6 capsules taken internally can be used for these same conditions.
Eyebright as a tonic, is taken to strengthen a weak brain and memory and is beneficial for headaches and colds.
Other remedies for eyestrain for when it is not possible to use eyebright are:
1. Bathe eyes in a "weak" salt water solution.
2. Boil a teaspoon of honey in 1 cup of water. Let cool. Use as an eyebath or place pads soaked in solution over the eyes.
